Founder and director Barry Bishop started out in the mid 1980’s in residential building in the greater Tauranga area building some stand out homes. He soon grew a reputation for delivering quality and the ability to take on complex builds. This led to new opportunities in civil construction in industries surrounding the Port of Tauranga. It was then, in 2000, Barry and wife Leanne decided to start their own business to tackle the needs of the industry and Bishop Building came to life.
With an increasing need in the petroleum and petrochemical industry to meet compliance and fast changing environmental and safety regulation, oil companies were tasked with having their storage facilities upgraded to improve containment. Determined, he steered the business towards providing a service that could react to this need and soon realised this was the business's sweet spot.
Not afraid of complexity or tight time frames, Bishop soon built a solid reputation for getting the job done with an ever-increasing list of high-profile clients. Now, much of the work involves projects on high hazard plants including fuel storage facilities, chemical process plants and power generators where health and safety is paramount, another key focus for the business.
Developing a stronger future
With the aim to future proof a sustainable business, Scott, who has played a pivotal part in the company since its conception, assumed the reins in 2020. With the support of younger brother Darren, who is an integral part of projects and operations, they continue to transform the business, recently rebranding to Bishop Developments, to better suit the environment they are working in while still retaining the Bishop family connection.
Subtle changes have also taken place to broaden the range of services complimenting what they do, along with improved systems that help navigate a modern business.
Scott and Darren also believe that maintaining the business's core values and providing opportunities for the wider Bishop team to grow, is key to developing a stronger future.
