Z Napier Fire Protection

Bishops were commissioned by Z Energy to replace the outdated fire protection systems at their Napier terminal up to the current regulations. The work was turnkey and included both civil and mechanical works and electrical.
The civil works included construction of an 18mtr diameter fire water tank foundation, fire water (containerised) pump foundations, foam tank foundations and bund, fire response shelter and some 160 pipe support foundations. The tank foundation was for a two million litre welded tank and involved a single pour of over 250 cubic metres of concrete. Due to the high volume, the pour started at 2.00AM in the morning so the finishing could be completed early afternoon. A series of drossbach tubes were installed into the foundation to allow the bolting down of the tank.
The mechanical works included installation of a fire water and foam ring main around the site (approximately 4km of pipe in total), installation of the pumps, valves and other mechanical equipment including a 5000ltr foam tank and a series of access platforms. Fire water deluge lines and foam pours were also fitted to the existing fuel storage tanks.
The electrical work included a new fire alarm system, control system and electrical and automation.
The installation was challenging as the work was undertaken on an operational site and was safety critical. Integration and commissioning of the system was undertaken in stages making sure that the site remained operational as well and secured against a fire emergency. In all the project was implemented over a 2-year period and successfully commissioned early 2022
